Choosing the Right Medication

Choosing the right medication

Choosing the medicine that’s right for you is something to decide with the advice of your healthcare practitioner. It’s not just how good the medicines are, since everyone responds differently to medicines and we all have different goals, lifestyles and medical history.

What are your weight loss goals?

What are your weight loss goals?

The first thing to think about is – what are your weight loss goals? Whichever medicine you choose, you’ll need to commit to dietary changes and exercise too. Your BMI is used as a measure of your clinical eligibility, as it indicates how effective an injectable weight management treatment will be for you.

  • 18.5 to 24.9: A neutral BMI
  • 25 to 30: Overweight
  • Over 30: Obesity

Check with your doctor that your weight loss goals are achievable.

What weight loss medications are available?

Mounjaro® (tirzepatide), Wegovy® and Ozempic (semaglutide) and Saxenda (liraglutide) are all injectable treatments that suppress appetite. Mounjaro® and Wegovy® are the most common and come as pre-filled, self-administered pens. Ozempic is only licensed in the UK for Type 2 diabetes management, but it is used off-label for weight management. The ingredient in Saxenda called liraglutide, is now available as a generic medicine called Nevolat.

How well do weight loss medications work?

When choosing your medication, do your research on how well they work. Both Mounjaro® and Wegovy® are highly effective for weight loss. People on Mounjaro have been shown to lose 20.2% of their body weight over 72 weeks, while those on Wegovy® lost 13.7%.(1)

A new higher dose of 7.2mg of Wegovy® has recently been discovered to achieve greater weight loss results than the standard dose, with nearly half of those taking it losing 20% or more of their body weight.(2) EU approval for the new Wegovy® higher dose is expected in early 2026. You won’t be able to buy it in the UK until after this and it will initially only be available privately before it becomes available on the NHS.

Nevolat is the generic equivalent of Saxenda and is usually cheaper than branded GLP-1 agonists like Wegovy®, and Mounjaro®, however Wegovy®, and Mounjaro® have been shown to perform better in clinical trials. A medicine that’s more effective can help you reach your target weight sooner, which reduces the cost of treatment over time. When used correctly along with a change in diet and increase in exercise, people can expect to lose around 5-10% of their starting body weight using Nevolat treatment.

In a clinical trial, two thirds of people taking liraglutide lost at least 5% of their body weight.(3)

Calculate your BMI

Please key in your:

  • Height
  • Weight
  • Ethnic background

The calculator asks for information on your ethnic background because people from an Asian, Black African, African-Caribbean or Middle Eastern ethnic background have a higher chance of developing health problems at a lower BMI.

Your BMI result will be displayed as a number within a category:

  • Underweight
  • A healthy weight
  • Overweight
  • Obese

You can then discuss your BMI with a qualified SlimEase representative.
