Mounjaro® treatment and how it works

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) for the management of obesity for certain patients. On this page we break down how this treatment works, how it benefits, and how to manage your equipment when taking it.

What is Mounjaro®?

What is Mounjaro®?

Mounjaro® is a once-weekly injection used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in adults and/or weight loss, weight management. It contains an active substance called tirzepatide (tir-zep-a-tide). Mounjaro® is what’s called a GLP-1 receptor agonist. This means it works in your body to mimic the action of two naturally occurring hormones; glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotrophic polypeptide (GIP) too. Mounjaro® slows the emptying of your stomach, so that you feel fuller for longer.

Mounjaro® is a weekly injection available in five doses. Your dose will depend on where you are in your treatment journey. The starting dose is 2.5mg. This increases in increments of 2.5mg until you reach 15mg.

It is important to continue to follow the advice on diet and exercise given to you by your healthcare professional.
